The Browns were clearly watching the clock closely because the new league year had barely begun when they made a couple of moves official.Cleveland wasted no time in announcing that they have acquired wide receiver Odell Beckham and defensive end Olivier Vernon in a trade with the Giants. They agreed to acquire each player at different times Kareem Martin Jersey
, but the need to wait until Wednesday afternoon to finalize the move meant it became one big deal.“Each of them respectively are very good football players who will come in here and help us achieve our goal, and that’s to be competitive year in and year out in the AFC North,” Browns General Manager John Dorsey said in a statement. “And hopefully, they are some of the pieces that will help us awaken this sleeping giant.”Guard Kevin Zeitler, safety Jabrill Peppers, a first-round pick and a third-round pick are going back to the Giants. There had originally been a pair of picks involved in a Vernon-Zeitler deal, but those were removed after the Beckham trade came to fruition. NEW YORK (AP) — Guaranteed payments for unrestricted NFL free-agent contracts this month make up just over half of the total money to be paid, down a bit from 2018 Womens Robert Thomas Jersey
, when Kirk Cousins signed a fully guaranteed $84-million deal. For the first 148 deals reached in March, the players’ union says $1.116 billion is guaranteed. That’s 50.15 percent of the nearly $2.227 billion in total values. Take out Cousins’ three-year deal, the 2018 total drops from 52.56 percent to 48 percent.Teams also have spent far more so far in free agency this year. There were 120 contracts worth $1.836 billion at this point in 2018. Total guarantees in 2018 were $965,479,118.The average amount per contract in this free agency period has been $15.04 million, of which the guaranteed dollars reached $7.54 million; the larger monetary agreements, such as quarterback Nick Foles‘ deal with Jacksonville for $88 million over four years, $50.125 million guaranteed Cody Latimer Jersey
, skew the average somewhat.Eighteen veterans signed contract extensions that totaled $226.725 million, of which 41 percent ($93.17 million) was guaranteed.Contracts in Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NHL are fully guaranteed for the length of the deal.“Obviously we are trying to figure how to improve that to 100 percent,” says Giants safety Michael Thomas, a member of the NFLPA’s executive committee. “We know it won’t happen overnight, but with best practices from the players, the agents and the agents of the union working together, we can get closer to the 100 percent.”The current 10-year labor agreement expires in March 2021. All player contracts are negotiated individually and the CBA does not specifically address them http://www.giantslockerroom.com/authentic-evan-engram-jersey
, so other mechanisms are needed to boost the guarantees. The fact the salary cap has risen substantially each year of this CBA since 2014 has helped the players get higher pay overall. There also are regulations requiring the 32 teams to spend at least a certain amount of their cap space each season. And, of course, there is (or should be) the competitive desire of each club. When Cousins received that megadeal from Minnesota last year, the NFL lagged far behind in guarantees. It still does.“No other league has that mandate,” 12-year veteran linebacker Lorenzo Alexander of Buffalo said. “It comes down to making that a norm. Whether in the CBA maybe we move toward it, or what the NBA has done where the select stars go out there and are demanding certain structure of their contracts. We need to look to our elite players, our quarterbacks who have that type of leverage. As they create that culture, they can make it a norm within the structure of football.“We have to collaborate as players Patrick Omameh Jersey
,” added Alexander, also a member of the NFLPA’s executive committee. “Owners always will fight tooth and nail” to avoid guarantees. Both players make salient points about how the current CBA — which often, particularly in the early years of the deal, was perceived as a loss for the union — has helped them and their peers.Alexander notes the health and retirement benefits in the agreement. Thomas cites the elimination of two-a-days in training camps and the curtailed hitting allowed in practices.“The biggest difference in CBAs, and you notice as a player, is from the safety area, because I have been able to elongate my career and get more earning power and playing multiple years,” Alexander said. Most annoying to any player you ask is the perception that pro athletes negotiate a guaranteed paycheck and then become too comfortable to fully apply themselves. Both Alexander and Thomas get riled up when they hear any of that.“It is an excuse … a terrible excuse Womens Dalvin Tomlinson Jersey
,” Thomas said. “A player getting guaranteed money would not change who he is as a competitor, and he will go out there and be the best he can be and try to be the best player ever. I do not think that will ever change.“If (an owner) feels like you got the right person, then invest in him,” he added.

,000 in guarantees."On Thursday, the New England Patriots officially announced the signing of ten undrafted rookie free agents. One of the players added is Texas tight end Andrew Back, whose limited contributions in the passing game and comparatively average athleticism led to him going unselected. That being said, Beck is still coming off a solid college career and brings plenty of experience as a blocker as well as a team captain. The Patriots obviously like the traits he brings to the table, and apparently made bringing the 22-year-old onto the team a priority heading into free agency. A look at his contract shows just how highly regarded a player Beck is: as first reported by the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin, Beck received $115,000 in guaranteed money from the Patriots Devin McCourty Jerseys Stitched
, split into a $15,000 signing bonus and a $100,000 base salary guarantee.Beck’s team-leading guarantees are are an indicator of how the Patriots view him and what kind of competition they probably faced to bring him on board. The Texas product, for example, is among the league-leaders in guaranteed money received as an undrafted signee: only three players — offensive tackles Ryan Pope ($165,000; Lions) and Mitch Hyatt ($150,000; Cowboys) http://www.patriotslockerroom.com/authentic-john-hannah-jersey
, quarterback Jake Browning ($140,000; Vikings) — were so far reported to have been given higher guarantees.Of course, his guarantee — the highest the team handed out since linebacker Harvey Langi received the same back in 2017 — does not ultimately guarantee Beck a spot on New England’s roster. However, it does show that the Patriots were willing to invest noticeable resources in a player they like. And, who knows, maybe the 6’3, 255-pound tight end will White Julian Edelman Jerseys

, $395,000 of which are non-guaranteed. Demaryius Thomas showed flashes of his old form in the Patriots final preseason game against the New York Giants. But as the page turns from the preseason to the regular season, head coach Bill Belichick says the team is still trying to figure out exactly what they have in the veteran receiver. In an interview on WEEI, Belichick said Thomas is still a rather unknown quantity for the Patriots at this stage.“That’s a tough question because we’re going on limited information,” he said. “We only activated him for practice right at the end of training camp. Of course, he played in the Giants game. We have to go on what we can go on. I’d say the improvement that he’s shown, and the work ethic White Rob Gronkowski Jerseys
, and what he’s been able to do has been good. It’s been to the point where we feel like he’ll be able to make a solid contribution for us this year. The question is ‘where will it go?’ I don’t know if any of us have the answer to that. But at least I know that he’ll work hard, he’s tough and he’s a dependable player who will put everything he has into it. So we’ll see what happens.”Thomas began camp on the physically unable to perform list due to his continued rehab from the Achilles tear he sustained in Houston last season with the Texans. He was only activated on Aug. 20 and had little time to show what he was capable of. Seven catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns against the Giants was a good way to make an impression, however. After briefly being released and re-signed to the roster through the weekend, Thomas will have more time to get up to speed and show what he can do entering his 10th season in the NFL.
CINCINNATI (AP) — John Ross got his diploma. Joe Mixon lost 10 pounds. The Bengals’ top rookies spent the last few weeks finishing their college careers and getting ready to try to make an immediate impact in the next one.The receiver and running back will be front and center between now and the season opener. An offense that slipped considerably last year is hoping the infusion of its top two draft picks will make a big difference right from the start against the Ravens on Sept. 10 at Paul Brown Stadium. The rookies are up for it.“Everybody’s a home run threat Joe Thuney Jerseys 2019
,” Mixon said Tuesday before the first practice of a mandatory minicamp. “What we’re adding to this offense with me and John, and they’ve already got A.J. (Green) and Brandon (LaFell), just the other pieces added to the puzzle — it’s going to be dangerous.”That’s the hope down the line. First, the rookies had some things to complete. Ross finished his undergraduate degree at Washington, a big moment for his family.“It was probably bigger than getting drafted in my opinion, just because I feel like it’s something that can’t be taken away from you,” Ross said. “I was the first generation to graduate in my family, so it was pretty big for me and everybody.”Ross is still recovering from a torn labrum and will be limited until training camp. He ran and did agility drills on Tuesday, but didn’t wear a helmet or participate in any passing drills that would force him to extend his arms. The speedy receiver — he ran a record 4.22 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine — got a crash course in the Bengals’ offense after he was drafted. There was a lot more to learn when he showed up for minicamp; the team gave the rookies a deeper look into the playbook.“Everything’s not all new,” he said. “I’ve seen a few of the things. It’s new material White Michael Bennett Jerseys
, but it’s not as hard as I thought it would be.”Mixon spent the last few weeks losing weight. He was 238 pounds when the Bengals drafted him, the most he’s weighed during his football career. He increased his workouts, cut back on carbohydrates and dropped 10 pounds for the start of minicamp.“I’ll never be that big again,” he said. “Never.”Mixon’s role will be one of the main story lines of training camp. The Bengals have incumbents Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard, who is recovering from a torn ACL suffered midway through last season. Cincinnati took Mixon in the second round because he’s so well-rounded, overlooking his suspension as a freshman at Oklahoma for punching a woman in the face.Mixon’s locker is right next to Ross’ locker, leaving the two linked in all they do going forward.“I just can’t wait to see him on the field,” Mixon said of Ross. “When we’re on the field, everything is going to take care of itself.”For the second year in a row, the Bengals are entering a season with a lot of newness on offense. Last year Michael Bennett Jerseys 2019
, Ken Zampese was promoted to offensive coordinator after Hue Jackson became Browns head coach. Rookie receiver Tyler Boyd developed as the season went along.“Last year, there was a lot of stuff that was new with (Zampese) taking over as the coordinator, then a couple new receivers,” quarterback Andy Dalton said. “We don’t have that this year.”NOTES: The start of the first minicamp practice was delayed about 15 minutes because of storms. The Bengals are the most northern NFL city without a covered field. … CB Dre Kirkpatrick didn’t participate in drills as he recovers from a hand injury. The teams can’t pretend it will be just another game when the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night in an AFC North showdown.“It’s another game, but it’s Pittsburgh, and they’re leading our division,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. “They beat us up there. They’re coming here, and it’s a big football game for us because we don’t get any more do-overs.”The Steelers won the clubs’ first meeting in Week 7 at Pittsburgh, 29-14.Both teams are coming off Week 12 wins. The Steelers (9-2) are currently riding a six-game win streak and have beaten the Bengals (5-6) five straight times. Pittsburgh was on the winning side against Cincinnati eight out of the past nine meetings.Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown enters the game playing at an MVP level. He leads the league in receptions (80) and yards (1,195). Six times this season White Danny Shelton Jerseys
, Brown eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark, though he did not top 100 yards against the Bengals.Brown has faced the Cincinnati defense 15 times in his career, 14 regular-season games and one playoff game. He went over 100 yards only three times in those contests, most recently in the playoffs after the 2015 season.Brown has just five receiving touchdowns against the Bengals. The 2017 Cincinnati pass defense has been very strong and will look to slow Brown and the Steelers passing attack again.Cincinnati ranks fifth in the NFL in pass defense, only allowing 203.8 yards a game. The Bengals are 10th in the NFL in points allowed at 19.5 per contest, so they figure to put pressure on Pittsburgh’s offensive line and running back Le’Veon Bell.Bell leads the NFL in rushing at 981 yards. He is poised to pass the 1,000-yard mark on a season for the third time in his five-year NFL career.Getting a mere 19 yards Sunday shouldn’t be a problem as the Michigan State product is facing a Bengals defense that is 28th in the NFL at stopping the run, allowing opponents an average of 126.6 yards a game. The Bengals finally had their own strong showing in the run game last week in a 30-16 win over the Cleveland Browns. Led by rookie running back Joe Mixon, the Bengals churned out 152 rushing yards.Finding that same freedom against the Steelers will not be so easy. The Pittsburgh defense only gives up an average of 96 yards per game on the ground, which ranks sixth in the NFL.The Steelers’ defense is ranked fourth in the league points allowed at 17.5 a contest. If the Bengals are going to win Danny Shelton Jerseys 2019
, quarterback Andy Dalton needs to make big plays in the passing game, especially to wide receiver A.J. Green. On paper, Pittsburgh pass defense looks stalwart, ranking third in the NFL by only allowing 193.4 yards a game. But the Steelers’ secondary has been gashed by big pass plays all season. In Pittsburgh’s 31-28 win over Green Bay on Sunday, Packers quarterback Brett Hundley threw three touchdown passes of 39 yards or longer. The Tennessee Titans scored on a 75-yard touchdown pass against the Steelers. The Indianapolis Colts scored twice on passes of 60 yards or more, and the Detroit Lions’ Matthew Stafford threw for 423 yards against the Steelers with two completions of 40 yards or more.“You can’t give up chunks on defense and give yourself chances to win,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after the Green Bay game. “We were able to overcome those things. We were probably fortunate, but it’s also probably a good sign of the group in terms of we’re a good enough team to kind of overcome those things.“We got enough togetherness to stay on task, but obviously we got to minimize some of those things. Some of those things have been issues for us in multiple games, particularly the big plays of late White Josh Gordon Jerseys
, so obviously that has to stop yesterday.”While Steelers need to eliminate giving up big plays on defense, the Bengals need Dalton to have a consistent, turnover=free night. The Pittsburgh offense should look to ride the legs of Bell, as the Bengals’ defense has fared well at containing Brown. Cincinnati can’t allow a different Steelers receiver or Bell to have a big game.

In 2014 when he was being recruited he picked the Broncos over a USC grayshirt offer. A grayshirt offer is when you sit out in the fall and enroll on scholarship the following spring. He chose Boise State because he was expected to push for immediate playing time as a true freshman for the Broncos in 2014.Shortly before he was set to leave for Boise he found out that his ACT score didn’t qualify, and he’d be academically ineligible that fall. Frazier was allowed to enroll at Boise State on scholarship, but he couldn’t be around the team. He was not allowed to attend practices or meetings, and he wasn’t allowed to be in the weight room when his teammates were there. He was forced to work out at odd hours early in the morning or late at night. You have to realize this is a kid from Los Angeles who at 18 moved to Idaho to play football. He had only two people that were friends, but they were both on the team so he couldn’t visit with them. “It was really hard, honestly,” Frazier said. “It was so tough. I couldn’t be around the team. I’d go lift for one hour and then go back to the dorms. Moving here and having two friends and not being able to ever see them, it was just really hard for me. I would talk to my parents every day and they just kept telling me to fight through it. It felt like the longest four months of my life, but I got through it.”To throw salt into the wound, he was on academic redshirt and that season counted as a year of eligibility. Plus he had to earn a 2.8 grade-point average to become eligible for the following year. Not being the most gifted student this was a trying task for Frazier, but he persevered and became eligible the following year. He played in 6 games as a freshman at the STUD position which is a hybrid OLB/DE who is on the line but rushes the passer and also drops into coverage. In 2016 he played in 12 games with 38 tackles, 4 TFL and 4 sacks, but he played most of the year with shoulder, ankle and knee injuries which all needed surgery. He finally gave into the pain before the Cactus Bowl. He was supposed to spread the surgeries out, but he elected to have them all at once. “I wanted to do it just to get it out of the way,” Frazier said. “I was like ‘I might as well just do it all at one time and recover at one time,’ but once I did it and I was in that wheelchair, I was like ‘maybe that wasn’t a good idea.’” He missed spring practice and was not cleared to play until just before fall camp.“It was not a wonderful experience,” Frazier said. “But I’m happy to experience that because it definitely humbled me and made me more grateful for a lot of things, especially football. His teammates appreciated all the struggles and hardships Frazier had been through and voted him one of the three permanent captains during his senior year. “I think it’s a story of hard work White Jamal Adams Jerseys
, I really do,” Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. “To overcome the adversity of sitting there and having to watch that entire first season and to go out there to prepare yourself to play and get on the field and then being injured … I think Jabril is in a good place now. I think he understands what it takes to be successful, and I think he understands that no matter how high he reaches right now and what level he’s at, he still has to get better and that it could be taken away from him too. There’s an appreciation for his opportunities.”I have watched 6 games of this kid, and he will need a serious infusion of intensity along with technical training to be effective. He has good size but is an average athlete at best, He had a 4.79/40, 30.5” vert and did 22 reps on the bench with 33 1/2” arms.He is not an instinctual player and is literally awful out in space. He had zero INTs and 4 passes defended in 4 years. He had 18 total sacks in 43 games, but I never saw him once beat a tackle to get one.He had 24.5 TFL in that time. Here is on. He is untouched on his way in from the edge. The video is quite self-explanatory. The only question remains is why the QB didn’t pitch the ball. The back is open with no one around him. It’s as if he just forgot the play. This was a gift TFL for Frazier. Here is a gift sack for Frazier when the offensive line forgets what its blocking assignments are on the play. He is playing the RDE position, and the line gets confused when the ROLB blitzes on the play. The TE who is in the slot kind of gives Frazier a handshake as he goes out into the flat, but it was the LT job to pick up Frazier on the play. This next play is the best play I saw Frazier make in 6 games. He is the LDE at the bottom of the screen, and he is again going up against a TE on the play. Once the ball is snapped the TE gets some help by the running back, but that back is Justice Hill who is really fast but is under 200 lbs with little to no power. This is the only time I saw him use a spin move, and it was very effective. Frazier can have violent hands at times but rarely uses them. His rush counters are almost non existent (save for this spin move), and he really doesn’t show a great plan of attack before the snap.Everything appears to be spontaneously made up at the instant it occurs. The same play from another angle. At least this play shows you he has some talent to work with for a DL or LB coach to build upon. You will even see him occasionally run down plays from behind, but they are too far in between for a NFL player. Unless the play is right in front of him he will seem confused as to a plan of action. This next clip is the type of effort you see far too often. He is #8, the player who is on the top of the screen near the 20 on the field. The play is being run to his side of the field, but he takes the outside route and has to run himself into a blocker (who is blocking someone else at the time) to have any contact on the play. He needs to read that play and attack by the hash where the play is. If the RB had broken through the tackle he was nowhere close to a position to affect a tackle. This next play is befuddling to me as he is the RDE who has contain responsibilities on the play but crashes down instead of holding his ground. He doesn’t read the play at all. This is a read option, and he has to guard the edge. He crashes down and tries to tackle the lead blocker. He wasn’t even faked the ball. Why would you do that? He took himself out of the play to attack a player who was never an offensive threat on the play, just puzzling. On this last play the ball is run directly at Frazier’s gap, but he is taken out easily by the pulling guard. It’s a simple trap play that he has to be more aware of and step inside that block or stack the guard to make the tackle on the play. The guard just drops him to the ground and keeps moving downfield like he was a tackling dummy. He has to use his hands much better in that situation to keep the guard off him so he can step into the hole and make the play. SummeryFrazier will need a complete rebuild of his technical skill set and film study with a coach to make him more effective on the field. I doubt a coach will allot that kind of time to a UDFA unless he sees some kind of spark from the player. He has good size Jamal Adams Jerseys 2019
, but he is sort of a tweener because he is not strong enough to play as a DE in the NFL and has tight hips which would make it difficult for him to play in space. In my opinion unless Frazier has a miraculous transformation in a few short months I don’t see how he survives the first cut if he makes it even that far. For the second straight week, Darryl Roberts graces the title image of the coverage series, and deservedly so. Thrown into extended action in relief of Trumaine Johnson, he’s been playing some great football over the past two weeks.Let’s take a look at the numbers!Previous editions: Pre 1, Pre 2, Pre 3, Pre 4, W1-DET, W2-MIA, W3-CLE, W4-JAX, W5-DEN, W6-IND, W7-MINRULESThe coverage numbers include only legitimate targets into the general area of a receiver/defender; throws in which a defender in coverage was directly involved the outcome. Throwaways and deflections at the line are excluded. The stats for each individual are that of the quarterback’s passing numbers when targeting the individual’s matchup. A player could receive coverage credit even if a teammate finished the play. For example, against Denver this season, Morris Claiborne tipped a pass in this direction that ended up being intercepted by Marcus Maye. I credited Claiborne with that interception.Penalties and pass breakups counted are only those accumulated in coverage. Penalties/PBUs picked up on blitzes, or penalties tackling another player’s responsibility, are not included. PBUs and INTs in the box score are not exclusive to one another.“Burns mitigated by opponent miscue,” or “miscues” (M) are included in charting to attempt to knock defenders who benefited from an egregious error by the offense (drop, horrible throw) and give perspective to the validity of their raw stats. A defender can still register an interception or incompletion to his credit on a miscued play.First White Marcus Maye Jerseys
, here’s a look at each targeted player’s total numbers in coverage against Chicago.Next, let’s take a look at the coverage numbers broken down by individual player-vs.-player matchups and man coverage vs. zone coverage. Some takeaways:Darryl Roberts keeps balling out. After flashing against the Vikings last week with a performance in which he allowed only 96 yards on 16 targets, Roberts allowed only 15 yards on 5 targets against the Bears. He’s closing quickly on balls underneath and sticking tight on go routes. While his performances these past two weeks have not correlated into any victories, his play has been perhaps the primary reason the Jets have stayed in each of these last two games into the fourth quarter.Morris Claiborne has not had that game yet in which he has been utterly destroyed, but he’s inching closer. He continues to do a solid job overall, but the miscues he has benefited from continue to pile up, while his overall production has dipped over the past three weeks. He allowed 142 yards, 2 TDs, and 6 total first downs on 19 targets from Weeks 6-8, compared to 135 yards, 0 TDs, and 8 total first downs on 25 targets from Weeks 1-5.Buster Skrine was iffy in his return, most notably allowing a touchdown in the red zone to Anthony Miller.Avery Williamson has done a solid job overall in coverage, rarely allowing anything catastrophic, but he did allow a season-high 3 first downs this week, all in zone coverage.FILMRoberts likes to play a lot of off coverage so he can take advantage of his 4.38 speed to make plays like this one. (Outside left, top)This snap is another display of Roberts’ speed. He makes the correct read on this throw being a go route, and beats Taylor Gabriel to the spot (in spite of the overthrow). Roberts is on the bottom the screen outside left. Here’s a look at the season totals for the Jets over the first half of the season.

He has started 18 games over his first three seasons, all of which have been with the Ravens. The Jets traded a conditional 2020 seventh round pick for Lewis last week and he remains under contract for this season at a salary of just over $2 million.BackgroundLewis was ranked as the 86th best offensive tackle prospect out of high school and was initially recruited to Colorado. After starting three games as a true freshman, Lewis started every game at guard in 2012 but then opted to transfer to Nebraska at the end of the season. He was forced to sit out the 2013 season due to the transfer rules and spent four week in jail following an assault charge, but eventually settled in as a full-time starter with the Cornhuskers over the next two years. After Lewis raised his stock at the East West Shrine Game, the Ravens drafted him in the fourth round and he ended up as an opening day starter as a rookie. He eventually started eight of the first 10 games before missing the last six due to injury.Injury struck again in his second season as he missed the entire year, but he bounced back to start 10 games last season.Lewis was rumored to have been released during training camp but the Jets eventually agreed to trade a conditional 2020 pick for him.Now let’s take a look at what Lewis brings to the table, divided into categories.Measurables/AthleticismLewis was 270 pounds when he arrived at Colorado, adding 15 after his freshman year and another 30 since then. He has decent length and posted average-to-good numbers at the scouting combine, although he can look slow-footed at times.Lewis ran a 5.22 in the 40-yard dash and did 27 bench press reps. His explosiveness and agility numbers were average, although he did add five inches to his broad jump number at his pro day.UsageLewis has mostly played at left guard but is viewed as a versatile option. Three of his starts in his rookie year were at left tackle and he was rumored to be a candidate to start at right tackle last season. He even played five snaps at center in preseason last year.At college, he played both guard and tackle, mostly on the left side. However, he was also employed as a blocking tight end in his rookie year and played some defensive tackle in high school.Pass ProtectionAt guard, Lewis has given up four sacks in 15 career starts, but his pressure rate hasn’t been too bad. In that role, he looks pretty solid at dropping into his stance and using his length to repel or slow down his man. However, his anchor can be an issue sometimes and a good bull rush can get him moving backwards or throw him off-balance.Lewis didn’t give up any sacks as Nebraska’s starting left tackle in 2014 or 2015 and when he lined up at left tackle as a rookie, Lewis didn’t give up any sacks in his three starts. However, that doesn’t tell the whole story because he gave up 21 total pressures, including four hits.As scouting reports predicted, he can have issues staying in front of speed rushers because he’s a little slow-footed getting back into his stance. This can lead to the knock-on effect of making him susceptible to being driven off balance by a speed-to-power move.Run BlockingLewis graded out poorly as a run blocker last season. He will have issues with getting stood up at the point of attack or losing leverage so his man can get off his block. However, there are plenty of examples of good run blocking plays on his film as well. This is a good sign, as he handled an elite talent in Grady Jarrett well on a couple of occasions. Here White Lac Edwards Jerseys
, he drives him off the line and keeps him sealed to the outside. While he mostly operated within zone blocking schemes, he shows an ability to pull and block on the move here. Here’s a really nice play from the tackle position. He gets on the move, helping the left guard set the edge with a combo block and then peels off to drive the linebacker out of the play.He can also be a good player to run behind in short yardage situations as he has the ability to get some traction in the trenches.Screen BlockingLewis hasn’t shown too many examples of getting out in front of screen passes and his athletic limitations can prevent him from being able to get a good angle in space. However, this play displays some great hustle as he first makes a cut block and then charges downfield to knock the tackler off and allow the runner to get a first down.Footwork/TechniqueIn the running game Lewis will do a good job of resetting his hand position and try to maintain leverage and stay on his man. His main issues are caused by his athletic limitations, specifically that he will lunge to make a block rather than getting his feet under him and that he can be slow to get into position to angle off his man in space.Good technicians can exploit Lewis by getting him off balance both in the running game and in pass protection. Geno Atkins gives him a problem here.PenaltiesLewis had six penalties in 2018 - three for holding and three for false starts. Penalties had been less of an issue for him in his rookie season, as he had four (two holds and two false starts), all of which were during the three games he started at tackle. He had a reputation for committing penalties in college, in large part because of his role in an overtime loss against Miami. Lewis had three costly penalties that day, including a senseless late hit in overtime to set up the winning score. He had 12 penalties in his redshirt junior year and nine as a senior.Special TeamsLewis’ only contributions on special teams at the NFL level have been as a blocker on the placekicking unit and he wouldn’t be expected to do anything more than that with the Jets.Instincts/IntelligenceAt the guard position, Lewis was often employed as the spare man so he had to keep his head up and give assistance to his linemates or pick up delayed blitzes. On this play, though, the Ravens struggle to adequately pick up the stunt and multiple players get to the quarterback. As noted, five of Lewis’ 10 career penalties have been false starts so he can have lapses in concentration.AttitudeAs a young player, Lewis was regarded as somewhat hot-headed and that may have factored into his arrest for a felony assault while at Colorado. He eventually got the felony charge dropped in exchange for pleading guilty to a misdemeanor and spent 28 days in a Colorado jail in 2014.Lewis is considered to have matured during his last few years at Nebraska, which eventually saw him named as a team captain. He’s got some character quirks - for a while he was sporting a flamboyant mullet - but he’s not afraid to mix it up and show some nastiness on the field.InjuriesLewis has major durability concerns as he’s really struggled to stay on the field at the NFL level. Although he started every game in his last three collegiate seasons, that did include a year off, during which he had shoulder surgery. As a rookie, he missed two starts with a neck injury and then the last six games with a sprained ankle, then suffered another shoulder injury in training camp the following year. That landed him on injured reserve for the entire 2017 season.Last year, he was stretchered off with what looked like a serious neck injury, but actually returned to the lineup after missing just two games. However, he missed the last four games with yet another shoulder injury and again was forced to endure offseason surgery. He had been on the PUP since the beginning of camp, but reports of his impending release by the Ravens suggested he had passed a physical with them. He also had to pass one with the Jets to make the trade final.Scheme FitThe Ravens have mostly been operating out of a zone blocking system, which should mean Lewis is a good fit for Frank Pollack’s scheme with the Jets. He essentially replaced Kelechi Osemele as the Ravens’ left guard in 2016.ConclusionsThere was perhaps a bit of an overreaction to this trade, which came on the heels of the Ryan Kalil signing with some Jets fans seeing the two moves as a sign that Joe Douglas was finally overhauling the line.In truth, this is little more than a depth move and Lewis probably isn’t even guaranteed a spot, as guys like Tom Compton Lac Edwards Jerseys 2019
, Ben Braden and Eric Smith look to secure reserve roles. With Brent Qvale recently injured, a spot has opened up and Lewis’ versatility gives him a good chance at earning that role. However, it’s not clear how long Qvale will be gone.Lewis graded out poorly last year and if he had played like that for the Jets, most of the same fans would almost certainly be calling for him to be dumped. However, some of his film isn’t bad and he’s only a fourth year player so perhaps he can improve his consistency and establish himself as someone they’ll look to bring back next year. By now, we’ve discussed most of the main prospects, need areas and positional groups ahead of this year’s draft. However, one area which is often overlooked is the extra value you can find in terms of special teams contributors, usually in the later rounds or even by signing undrafted free agents. These really fall into two groups. The first is specialists, which doesn’t just include kickers, punters, long snappers and return men, but also all-round contributors who can make a roster for their special teams prowess alone. The Jets signed both Rontez Miles and Nick Bellore as undrafted free agents and they proved to be this kind of player. The second group comprises those good offensive or defensive prospects that also bring value on special teams. This means they can make vital contributions so that their roster spot doesn’t go to waste if it takes them some time to get into the rotation.Sometimes players that started out by contributing on special teams can end up making good contributions on offense or defense, since sticking around for a few years gives them time to develop and know what is required of them. Josh Martin was a recent example of this.Equally a player who was targeted as a position player might just end up as a specialist, like Justin Miller, or a player who had good special teams potential will end up being so indispensable that their special teams abilities are rendered moot, like Darrelle Revis.Let’s work our way through some examples to identify some hidden gems, or players who might be more valuable than they are currently considered to be.Kickers and PuntersThe ones to watch here are Utah duo Matt Gay and Mitch Wishnowsky whom the Jets reportedly showed interest in at their pro day. The Jets signed Utah punter Tom Hackett as an undrafted free agent a few years ago and he’s been mentoring his Australian compatriot Wishnowsky.Aside from Gay, the top rated kickers include LSU’s Cole Tracy and Oklahoma’s Austin Seibert. The Jets already let Chandler Catanzaro walk once so presumably they’re not married to him as their kicker for this year.Other punter options include Jack Fox from Rice and Jake Bailey from Stanford but the Jets are less likely to make a move here because they have Lac Edwards, who they seem happy with.Return SpecialistsIt seems like the pool of return specialists in this year’s draft is a little thinner than we’ve seen in the past, but the Jets could bring one in to compete to be Andre Roberts’ replacement. A player like Greg Dortch from Wake Forest - the only player in this year’s class with multiple punt return touchdowns in 2018 - or Tony Pollard from Memphis, who had seven career kickoff returns, could be valuable. If you wanted someone capable of returning both punts and kickoffs, Georgia’s Mecole Hardman could be a good choice. He’s also got a lot of potential as a receiver.Higher-profile prospects that have kick return experience include South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel and Ohio State wide receiver Parris Campbell. However White James Carpenter Jerseys
, specialists that would be picked up almost exclusively for their return abilities include Michael Walker from Boston College and J-Shun Harris II from Indiana. Harris is a tough cookie, as he has recovered from three ACL tears.Long SnappersLong Snappers are people too and Indiana’s Dan Godsil or Nick Moore from Georgia seem to be regarded as the most likely to be targeted. The Jets seem unlikely to move on from Thomas Hennessy, though.All-round contributorsIn looking for an all-round “special teams monster”, the obvious candidate is Minnesota linebacker Blake Cashman who racked up an impressive 38 special teams tackles over the past three years. However, scouts also showed interest in the likes of linebackers Connor Strachan from Boston College and Joey Alfieri from Stanford, as well as Texas A&M fullback Cullen Gillaspia, who are all considered to have the potential to be that kind of player. Any of these could prove to be a valuable late-round pick-up or undrafted free agent signing. As ever, there’s a bunch of cornerback prospects who’ve had good production as gunners in college, including David Long, Amani Hooker, Justin Layne and Julian Love. Even Byron Murphy, who some had expected to be the first cornerback selected, had five special teams tackles in limited action last year. However, it seems more likely he’ll start somewhere and not be used on special teams and that could apply to some of the others named above, too. Some other defensive backs that are good special teams contributors but also could be considered good defensive prospects include Fresno State safety Mike Bell, Florida safety Chauncey Gardener-Johnson and two players we mentioned the other day in our list of players not enough people are talking about; Marshall’s Malik Gant and Akron’s Kyron Brown. Pollard, who was mentioned above for his return abilities, has also been productive in kick coverage. He had nine tackles in 2017, where he saw plenty of work as a gunner. Ohio State receiver Terry McLaurin has also shown some abilities as a gunner, but the Jets might be skeptical of this because when they drafted Devin Smith from the same school, he was considered to be an excellent gunner, but when he actually got to the NFL he had no idea how to deal with being double-teamed.Finally, Boston College defensive lineman Zach Allen has also shown an ability to contribute on special teams. He blocked two kicks in 2018.

, Minn. (AP) — When the Minnesota Vikings take the field against New Orleans in their preseason opener, Irv Smith Jr. will be the latest but nowhere close to the last person in the country to commemorate his 21st birthday with a visit to the Big Easy. For Smith, though, this Friday night awaits as a truly unforgettable occasion. The rookie tight end will not only celebrate another year of life but make his NFL debut in the same stadium where his father spent most of his professional career in front of a host of family and friends in the city he calls home.“It’s crazy how everything worked out,” Smith said.Selected in the second round of the draft out of Alabama, the 6-foot-2, 242-pound Smith was born after his dad, Irv Smith Sr., left the Saints after five seasons. Smith Sr. played his last two years in the league with San Francisco and Cleveland, respectively. The future football player son was just an infant then, so the memories of having a father in the NFL have been shaped largely by household memorabilia and internet searches. That doesn’t make him any less proud, of course. He’s determined, too, to establish a longer and better career than his pops.Long before the statistics are added up, well, there are training camp stories to tell.“When he was with the Saints, they had to go all the way to Wisconsin,” Smith said, alluding to the annual trip the Saints made from 1988-1999 to escape steamy Louisiana for the northern section of the Mississippi River valley in the bluff-lined college town of La Crosse. “I was like, ‘Why would you all go to Wisconsin?’ He was like, ‘You don’t ask. You just go.’ I thought that was funny.”After developing at a pro-caliber college program, Smith has advanced to an organization with sparkling facilities as state-of-the-art as any in the league. His dad?“He said that he used to get an IV between practices, all kind of stuff,” Smith said. “It’s good that we don’t have to do that now.”The Vikings have been essentially filling Smith full of their offensive plays instead. With a desire to employ more “12” personnel packages, with one running back and two tight ends, Smith’s field-stretching, pass-catching ability presents a wealth of potential for quarterback Kirk Cousins. Smith could line up in the backfield as a hybrid fullback, in the slot in a bunch or stack formation Danielle Hunter Jersey
, out wide to create a mismatch elsewhere in the formation, or simply in a standard three-point stance next to the tackle.Without a proven third wide receiver beyond stars Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, the new scheme directed by offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski and designed by offensive adviser Gary Kubiak will carry a lot of responsibility for the tight ends.Cousins, for one, has acknowledged a lack of trust last season in ninth-year veteran Kyle Rudolph’s ability to get open, portending an increase in passes sent his way. Smith could get in on that action, too, provided he can keep up with the steep learning curve at a complex position.“He’s swimming, because we’re asking a lot of him right now,” Kubiak said, adding: “But that’s the way it should be. That’s why he’s here.”Cousins praised Smith’s mobility and eagerness. He also noted that during the first week of practice Smith was a split-second slow to step off the ball upon pre-snap command, for example, the type of detail in this sport that can determine whether a particular play is productive or not.Given all the extra time spent with tight ends coach Brian Pariani on top of his high-level experience at Alabama, though, the Vikings have seen enough good in Smith’s technique to supplement the natural ability to believe he’s on track for a significant role if not right away then soon after.“It’s not perfect, by no means, but the kid is really willing to work,” Stefanski said. “That’s what I appreciate about Irv.” I will start by saying I am glad to be back. Good to get on the practice field. It is good to get the bad taste out of our mouths from last year. It was disappointing the way the season ended. We are excited now to be building toward 2019 and to continue to build team chemistry, which is what OTAs start to become about is just spending time with one another and developing with new teammates and getting to know the rookie class and getting to know a new system. There is a lot of work to be done and we only have about 11 practices left. We have to take advantage of every day and looking forward getting [Stefon] Diggs back tomorrow. That will be fun to have him back. Q: Were you favoring your leg out there?A: I tweaked it a little bit yesterday, but I’ll be alright. I am trying to get the reps out here rather than sit out and not play. When you do that then you’re going to have a little bit of a gimp to you.More Vikings coveragePreview: Cook, Vikings look to keep rolling vs. PackersTop Tweets: Vikings prepare for Packers with TMNT hype videoBarr, seasoned Vikings defense off to strong startNew offense, same Rodgers: Vikings prep for LaFleur’s PackersVikings re-sign center Jones, waive rookie TE DillonQ: What have you seen so far with Garrett Bradbury?A: He’s a class act. He tucks his shirt in every day. I think that sends a message right there. He is ready to work. He’s got his shorts tied tight, tucked in jersey. I respect that. From there he is a hard worker, he is a smart kid, very mature. I look forward to him being here a long time. I said, “Garrett Linval Joseph Jersey
, last year I think I worked with, from the time I got here in April to the end of the season, probably four centers. That is less than ideal.” I said, “I’d like to have you and I work together for about the next decade if that is okay with you.” So we’ll see what happens but that would be my goal and I think the organization’s goal. I just tried to set that vision for him to say, “You be the guy here for the next ten years and let’s not have to worry about having anybody else snap for the quarterback.” He’s got a long ways to go to do that but he’s got all the right stuff and we’ll just keep stacking days on top of one another to get him where he needs to be.Q: What do you look for in communication styles as a quarterback to know Garrett Bradbury is taking those steps?A: Well you sit around at the breakfast table and you just get to know him as a person and understand he has his head on straight. There’s maturity there. That is a good place to start. That is what all those meetings are about at the combine, the Senior Bowl, and those kinds of things to get to know players as people. Because ultimately to win, you have to have good people. If you are a great athlete but not a great person, eventually it is going to catch up with you. I think they’ve done a good job of bringing good people into our locker room. Garrett is certainly a great person, so he is made of all the right stuff. He just has to learn how to block people like Linval Joseph. I joked with him today, I said, “You see Darth Vader over there? You are going to have to block him. You ready?” I think it’s been to our advantage Linval has taken a couple days off here but when he gets back, it’s for real. That is the challenge, just getting caught up to speed with blocking the best in the world.Q: How does it feel starting here in the offseason compared to last year?A: I’ve always felt in football that continuity is a big part of having success. Being able to be back for a second year should help. There is more of a command. I can take a little more ownership and a little more control than maybe what I had last year. Then you add the fact that it is a new system so there is still some level of starting over a little bit. I look forward to having continuity the best we can, and the better you play and the more we win, you are able to keep that. Players stick around, coaches stick around. That lends itself to having more success. That is what we are working towards.Q: Has there been a change in terminology in the system?A: There has been a lot of changes. A lot of changes. Terms, formations, motions, the way we even philosophically are handling things. But I think it’s a positive thing. We are excited about the scheme, about the way it’s designed and about the philosophy behind it. I think there is a big track record through the years of coach [Gary] Kubiak having success. I love that Kevin Stefanski has been around Brad Childress. He’s been around Pat Shurmur. He’s been around Norv Turner. He’s really seen some of the best offensive minds of the last two decades. He’s been around them. That really helps him pick and pull from all of that to create the 2019 Vikings offense.7View Gallery Gallery:Things to watch at Vikings 2019 OTAsBrad Rempel | USA TODAY SportsQ: Have you looked at old Kubiak offenses?A: Yeah, I watched a lot. Going back to really when he got to Houston, watching those cut-ups. So I’ve seen a lot of Owen Daniels and Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson and Arian Foster and all the way through the sheriff [Peyton Manning] in Denver and watching him play. Even some Trevor Siemian cut-ups, too. That has been good. We have cut-ups, too, from when Kevin was here as an assistant from back in the day with coach Childress and Norv Turner. We’ve got it all. Kevin jokes that, “Go back to our cut-ups from all of the installs and you could watch film for days,” because we have just about the entire history of the NFL in that cut-up.Q: What is the potential to have Irv Smith Jr. and Kyle Rudolph on the field at the same time?A: I think it’s a win for us. I think that Kyle has done so many good things for so long and so to have him out there is a great sense of comfort. When you add Irv’s youth and athleticism that is a great plus. You have five eligible on every play no matter how you cut it Brett Jones Jersey
, you have five players that are eligible. You want to get the best five and the right mix and the right match. You just try to get the best players you can out there, whether it is receivers, tight ends, running backs. But do something that is going to put pressure on the defense. And I do think having Kyle and Irv out there as a combination should be able to do that.Q: Do you know anything about Jordan Taylor yet?A: Yeah, I really like him. He’s a diamond in the rough. He’s got some stuff to him. Not only does he have some juice, but he’s been on the details. If a route calls for him to get to 14 yards, he gets to 14, he doesn’t get to 13. If it’s a double move, he runs a double move with the right technique. He gets to the right spot and catches the football when it’s a tough catch. I love playing with people who are on their details and he is that way. He is going to be a big asset and probably one of those players who is quietly acquired, but ends up being anything but quiet come the season.Q: Are you surprised at Kyle Rudolph’s decision to participate in OTAs despite contract speculation?A: No surprise. Kyle is going to be consistent and be the guy he’s always been. We love him for it, and it’s why he’s played as many years as he has and had so much production and has stayed healthy. It’s not by accident, it’s something that he’s worked towards and built towards. I think his future is bright and he’s got nothing to worry about.Q: What does a healthy Pat Elflein do for the offensive line?A: I think it will be a great help. He’s getting a lot of work in at guard, and obviously he can play center too. He’s had a lot of production and a lot of plays, and he’ll take another step here in year three. And know for me as a player, I took my biggest step year four. We’re always developing and improving, and I see Pat doing the same thing this year. He’s one of the funniest guys on the team to me, it’s kind of a sneaky funny. I also like that too, because he makes practice a little more joyful than it otherwise would be.Q: You had to work with multiple centers last year, learn timing and snap counts. How do you take that into this year, anticipating how long it may take to pick things up with a new center in Garrett Bradbury?A: It’ll take time, but you have to remember that it’s May 22nd, and not September 10th. We have time, and we’ll use it and take advantage of it, but the hope is that Garrett’s here for the next decade. As much as there may be some growing pains to get to where we want to be, I think that’s okay as long as we can have that continuity. Where it gets tough is when you constantly have turnover at that position. Hopefully Garrett will be the guy for a long time.
